在共和黨總統候選人川普((Donald Trump)暗示，一旦敗選可能不會認帳、並將採取法律的挑戰行動之後，美國總統歐巴馬20日罕見地發表措辭嚴厲的評論，並呼籲民主黨人以大勝來杜絕川普聲稱選舉遭到操控的危機說法。

歐巴馬表示，「當你試圖在人們的腦海中播種質疑我們選舉合法性的種子時，這傷害到我們的民主。」「當你在最後一場辯論夜，在沒有絲毫證據下暗示選舉操縱或舞弊時，川普成為美國史上首位暗示即便輸了也不承認敗選的主要政黨提名人…而這不是件開玩笑的事。」

歐巴馬這番不尋常的嚴厲評論，顯示白宮認為這場滿懷惡意的選舉，並不只是要擊敗川普或贏得國會的控制權而已，而是要澆熄川普民粹主義的信條。

川普19日在和民主黨對手希拉蕊．柯林頓(Hillary Clinton)進行第三場辯論時，暗示他可能不會接受選舉結果。而他20日在造勢場合中再度表示，他願意承諾、會完全接受這次總統選舉結果，但條件是「如果是我贏」。川普的言論已引發權力是否能夠和平轉移的問題，也招來各方批評。
